Anglican chaplaincy at Hughesovka

A Project 'Spin-off’

The research for the project from time-to-time turns up interesting historical and artistic information and material that is not directly relevant to the main subject area. An example of this concerned the history of the Anglican chaplaincy at Hughesovka (now Donetsk) in the Ukraine, founded by the Welsh industrial entrepreneur, John Hughes of Merthyr Tydfil. Research at the Guildhall Library and in the Gibraltar Diocesan Offices, both in London, by Dr John Morgan-Guy, brought to light fascinating glimpses of the life of this now all-but-forgotten church, which was overwhelmed by the Russian Revolution of 1917. A short article recently published by Dr Morgan-Guy in the journal European Anglican (No.31, Autumn 2006) briefly outlined the final days of this church, dedicated to St David and St George.
