Martin Crampin
BA(Wales); MA(Wales)
AHRC Project Artist, Researcher & Designer (2005–8)
I began to explore the possibilities of digital imaging, installation and multimedia through the creation of artwork interpreting Welsh tales such as Math Son of Mathonwy and Geraint son of Erbin while completing a degree in Interactive Arts from Newport School of Art and Design in 1995.
These interests were contextualised through archaeological and historical work while pursuing an MA in Celto-Roman Studies from 1996–8 at the University of Wales College, Newport, culminating in a thesis examining the creation of the past in Welsh medieval narrative and by the manipulation of the landscape.
Since 1996 I have exhibited both nationally and internationally, after a period working as an artist in residence at the Alun School, Mold in Spring 1996. Much of this work has been based on medieval themes, such as the Lives of the Welsh Saints and the visual culture of medieval Wales and Ireland.
After gaining some experience working on commercial multimedia projects, in 1999 I was appointed to work on the Visual Culture of Wales Project based at the University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies in Aberystwyth. Working with the project leader Peter Lord, and producer Will Howard, I was responsible for the creation of a series of CD-ROMs that accompanied the six printed volumes. The second CD-ROM in the series, The Visual Culture of Wales: Imaging the Nation, was awarded the Besterman McColvin medal for an outstanding work of reference in the electronic category at the CILIP Awards in 2002
This work included research and writing, illustration, photography, design, programming and various administrative activities in collaboration with a small team. During the course of the project I gradually took on more of these responsibilities, and contributed much additional research and imaging to the final volume, Medieval Vision, published in 2004, including new work on the imaging of the Celtic Revival in Wales.
A similarly wide range of contributions to the Imaging the Bible in Wales Project (2005–8) included management, production and design of the electronic outputs in collaboration with the project team and our consultants, Nigel Callaghan and Chris Gibson. Much of my work involved the photography and recording of artworks from places of worship, and addition of this material on the online database. I wrote, researched and designed the themes for the DVD-ROM as well as a section for the book Biblical Art from Wales.
Since completing my work on the Imaging the Bible in Wales Project I have been working on illustrations for a new book exploring Celticity at the University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies, and more recently developing our work on stained glass in Wales, which has arisen in part from the AHRC project. I also work for Aberystwyth University: as a web designer for the School of Art, and as a part-time lecturer in Digital Imaging for the Department of Education and Lifelong Learning. I have also continued to work independently as an artist and designer, including design for the Chaplaincy and Monastic Wales websites at the University of Wales Lampeter.
